Community Champions recognised by Hetton Town Council
Hetton Town Council handed out Champions of the Community awards at a presentation held earlier this week.

Hetton Town Mayor Cllr Susan Waterston and Deputy Town Mayor Cllr Philip Dowell with award winners Leon O’Connor Ahmadi and Margaret Scanlin.
The winners are Margaret Scanlin from Hetton-le-Hole and Leon O’Connor Ahmadi (age 15 years) from Easington Lane.
Margaret was nominated for her charity and community work over many years whilst Leon received the nomination for his keenness and enthusiasm for helping out at Easington Lane Community Access Point.
Cllr Susan Waterston, Hetton Town Mayor presented both winners with framed certificates and prizes of Sunderland Gift Cards and said “The Town Council is keen to recognise the commitment made by local people across all age groups which benefit the community.”
Margaret commented ”I’m stunned! I really enjoy working in the local community; and it’s a welcome bonus to be recognised in this way by the Town Council.”
Leon, a volunteer at ELCAP, came along with foster carer Carol Smith. Leon said “I enjoy helping out at ELCAP and I’ve been able to get catering qualifications too.”
Carol added “We’re immensely proud of Leon and the commitment he shows. Thanks to the Town Council for making the award which I’m sure will further encourage Leon.”
The award nominations were made by Members of Hetton Town Council to recognise the great work being done by Margaret and Leon in the community.
