Hetton Town Council marks Historic County Flags Day
The County Durham flag is flying high at the offices of Hetton Town Council to celebrate Historic County Flags Day on 23 July.
Councils across England, Scotland and Wales mark this event locally to celebrate national and local history. The aim of Historic County Flags Day is to get as many county flags flying across Great Britain as possible on the day to mark the nation’s historic counties.

The British public are urged to use social media and the hashtag #CountyFlagsDay on and leading up to 23 July to promote their county identity. Cllr Dave Geddis, Hetton Town Mayor said “Following the marking of County Durham Day in March, the Town Council is again pleased to be flying the flag to celebrate this national event.”
Hetton resident Clive Lee added ”There is a strong and lasting affinity to County Durham within the local community. It’s great to see the Town Council supporting the historic county.”
Peter Boyce, Chairman of the Association of British Counties said: “For centuries the 92 historic counties of the UK have formed the familiar geographical background to our national life. The historic county provides a living link to past generations who trod the same ground and nurtured the same loyalties as today’s Britons.
Displaying the County Durham flag on 23 July (and every other day too!) is a perfect way to show your support.”
The Town Council is flying the County Durham Flag until 26 July.
