Hetton Town Mayor Cllr Dave Geddis with Award winners Marie Ashforth and Thomas Hackett
Hetton Town Council handed out Champions of the Community awards at its meeting held this week.
The winners are Marie Ashforth from Hetton-le Hole and Thomas Hackett (age 10 years) from East Rainton.
Marie was nominated for her work in rescuing and caring for wildlife in the town, whilst Thomas received the nomination for his keenness and enthusiasm for helping out with local litter picks in the community.
Cllr Dave Geddis, Hetton Town Mayor presented both winners with framed certificates and said “The Town Council is keen to recognise the commitment made by local people across all age groups which benefit the community. These are the first awards made for several years and I hope this will be become an annual occasion.”
Marie commented ”I’m truly shocked to receive the award – I love looking after rescued and injured birds, seeing them back to fitness and releasing them back into the wild if possible. It’s very nice to receive recognition from the Town Council.”
Thomas, a committed litter picker, came along with mam Tara.
Thomas said “It’s important to look after our local environment – I enjoy litter picking and it helps keep my area tidy for everyone.”
Mam Tara added “We’re very proud of Thomas and the work he does. Thanks to the Town Council for making the award to Thomas.”
The award nominations were made by Members of Hetton Town Council to recognise the great work being done by Marie and Thomas in the community.
